Two young Kunqu actresses, Dan Miu (left), Jijing Hu (right), do rehearsal in Kunqu Opera Theater in Suzhou, China, on Dec. 26th, 2017. "Sifan 思凡” is one act of the Kunqu play “孽海记” which tells the story of a buddhist nun. She betrayed her believes and eloped with her lover, a buddhist. Usually it is performed by one single person but now what we are seeing is the updated version -"duo Sifan" - performed by two actress.
The "duo Sifan" haven’t been performed on the stage for about 30 years because it requires superb skills and harmonious corporations. It asks the two performers to act like one single person. One’s acting should be like another’s reflection in the mirror.
And also, Kunqu Opera is intangible and be transmitted from generation to generation by oral and face-to face communication. The only two artist who can perform this act are around 80 years old so there is no much time for them to pass this skills to young actors. They decided to do this in this winter vacation and the two actress in the image only have one months for remembering all the lines, all the dances and cooperate perfectly with their partner. This image was shoot one day before they did an officially video recording. Though their performance hasn't been perfectly done, it is still glad to see that the duo Sifan doesn’t fade away but be reborn on the stage.
